I also aggressively adblock that site, so it's possible that's blocking some of the more obnoxious messaging. I write everything in Guitar Pro for a reason.) (Their in-browser "Pro" tab player is godawful. This hasn't happened to any of my submitted tabs as far as I know, but I'd be absolutely furious if it did. Even though I choose to use other sites now, I never really held anything against them for being annoyingly pushy, but if they're going to be restricting access to previously open tabs that's too far. I tolerated UG before because pro tabs were ignorable and the annoyingly pushy ads still didn't bother me much. Of course UG is allowed to profit from their service since they do provide the valuable service of hosting the tabs, but there are plenty of ways to do that other than actively dismantling the community culture that's built up around internet tab sharing over the decades. Most of the best tabs on there for classic stuff are OLGA tabs, which were intended to be freely shared and accessed by anyone. UG doesn't write any of their tabs that aren't pro tabs (and probably not even lots of those), they just host them. It's cause it was all freely available before for years, all created by the community for the community out of good faith between musicians.

Do you use the pro service? Is it worth it? Has this happened to your submitted tabs? Have you seen tabs you used to use recently become available only to Pro users? I’d like to hear from anyone else who’s noticed this change. I consider this a dirty business practice, especially as it’s happening (at least in my friend’s case) without the creators consent. They’re pretending that users have the option for standard or Pro, but they are quietly converting thousands of tabs to Pro only. I messaged a friend of mine who used to write out tabs and put them on the site recently and he was shocked to find many, many of his submitted tabs were now marked as “Pro”, making them inaccessible to the vast majority of users. However, now they are only available with the pro service.

I’ve even found the exact tabs from the exact users that I used to use. I’ve been revisiting songs I used to know. That alone hurts the experience of playing through their site, but they’ve recently taken things a step even further. To close some of these ads, you have to choose an option with some rude line like “No thanks, I don’t want to be good at guitar”. These tabs and chords are user submitted, so the site isn’t doing anything but hosting them. I’m sure it’s useful for some people, but I’m fine with just the tabs. These ads are always for their “Pro” service. They started popping up randomly, blocking out the entire screen, and often have incredibly hard to find close options. I told myself, ‘fine, it’s a business and they have to make money somehow’. Now I avoid it at all costs as it provides the shittiest possible user experience of any website I use. It used to be an incredibly deep, easy to use site. I’ve been using since I first started playing in 2004.
